Firstly i have to confess that before visting your site I never was a particularly lonely or unhappy person. Thankfully after browsing your site for a while, I am still not a particulary lonely person, I am, on the other hand, now quite depressed. Maybe you should post some links to a depression help site. All this talk of lonliness and losers (sob sob) has just left me quite depressed.

I believe that there are more people today than ever before but more lonely people than before. With all the people there are today, it would seem that there would be a more easier way to bring longly people together and help solve this problem, but as far I know there is not. In the song written in the 60's by Simon and Garfunkle, the Sounds of Silence, it talks about people talking but not speaking, hearing but not listing. I believe that this applies today more than in the 60's when it was written!

Reading people's entry in the guestbook is what really touched me the most. Reading and finding correspondences with my own life has been interesting. At times i have almost cried. It's made me realise just how severe my situation is. Unlike most of the people here who seem to be lonely even though they are in relationships. The truth is that i have never been in a relationship and i am 32 years old. I've always had people around but none who have wanted me. Many of the women i have known have said i am sweet, cute, blah blah blah (i hate cuet etc), but none have actually ever been interested in me. It's like i am a total freak. Anyway before i bore to death i think the site is a great idea and keep it up.

I have appreciated reading through your articles on this web site. It has been a help to me as I have searched for answers to my depression and loneliness. The part that struck me the hardest was the Anxious/Ambivalent connection to a caregiver. I had to talk to my mom about this one and soon realized that between my mom, my two older sisters that helped raise me, and a babysitter I had four mothers. Talk about being confused! Your description on this area described me perfectly. This has been a wonderful help. Continue the fantastic work.

Thank you so much for helping me understand completely. I always knew what sparked my lonely streak but this site put a detailed perspective on loneliness for those who may not entirely understand how and why we feel this way. This site is not for losers or rejects; instead, it is for people who have lost the light and would like to recapture it once more.

I read some of those poems and they are very touching I can relate to them, because as a Child I was very shy and it was hard for me to make friends so then I was very lonely. Now my Husband is serving in the U.S. army and he has to be apart from me and everybody critizes or puts me down for feeling lonely. What do you think about that?

Hello there, I was just reading the web of loneliness and was surprised to hear there are so many people out there who feel alone. I am a 35 year old female living alone with no family and have had an ongoing problem with loneliness for many years. However things are improving, I joined a club for people in my situation and have made some good friends and have travelled roung the country meeting them. My problem has been finding similar people with the same experiences as myself, as many people of my age are alone due to divorce and have family, and although I can empathise they have had different experiences and I cannot relate to them. I was agoraphobic for many years due to bullying and even now will not venture out at night. I have no siblings, and my parents died as they had me late in life, I was totally alone and things had to change. My advice to anyone who is lonely is to get out there and do things, take a hobby, mix with people who you have things i! n common with. I know the feeling of going out , walking down the street and passing families and couples, you feel a big brick wall between you and them. Thanks to an amazing club I joined I have made some great friends who really believe in me and have helped my confidence enourmously. You just have to get out there, if you shut yourself away nothing will change, I know because I did it for years. The reasons are too lenghtly to go into, but things don't always stay the same. Last year I found myself a boyfriend, but we are taking things slowly, it has taken me 10 months to accept it has happened, it was so hard to imagine after 35 years of being single! He also has no family and is older than myself, the first few months of the relationship seemed so surreal. If I wouldn't have made the effort to get out and meet people I wouldnt have my freinds or the special man. Life is very short, make the most of it. You are never too old to banish the loneliness, it is only ! too late when you're no longer here. I hope that this true story give s hope to anyone who feels down and despondant. Things can change. I wish I could set up my own friendship club to get people together who are lonely, as I know how vert unpleasant it is.

the attachment theory material is so interesting ........i studied it in college and ended up living with the professor that taught it ! my relationships have always been a challenge ...... yeah , screwed up childhood , abuse , sexual , emotional , physical and spiritual . i have tried to "create " a loving family throughout my life . i pick thewrong person . get wrapped up in the high that a relationship brings.in love with "being "loved ..... they leave ...i dont think i am promiscuious , just need that one person in my life ....i am not a drinker , druggie , but maybe a "shrink" would lable me with some bullshit when all the long i have suffered at the hands / minds of my parents who due to their lack of relationship skills have hurt me .irreversibly i guess .....love is so crucial , critical . it makes us human ......the yearning is what makes us human ..........touch , not un invited or freaky abuseive touch . but the touch from that person in your life that hits the mark is the only thing that seems to drive us ......what fucking hell .........

It was only recently that I even recognised loneliness at the heart of some social and emotional issues that have been troubling me in past weeks. The website helped to further define the nature and implications of loneliness and I'm now on my way to taking active steps to open up more of myself to others, take the risk of exposure, and not only gain better friendships but also know myself better too. As a flipside to acknowledging loneliness, I also realiise how much I undervalued friendship and emotional connection with others. People who feel deeply lonely may be amazed that one can be lonely and not clearly realise it.

I do not need to understand loneliness - what I was looking for were other lonely people - not dates, nor relationships like other sites have. I am alone a lot of the time. I am not board, nor depressed. I have an education, a job, hobbies (too many really). I just need to be heard and I need to be heard by people who are also lonely, but not depressed - a good old chat about anything kind of thing I would think would help. thanks

My story is not really dramatic. I'm just single mother with 3 children. I have a good job and am financially independent. The kids are doing well in school and life. So in the grand scheme of things although things are not quite perfect, I really shouldn't complain. But it does get lonely going through life on your own.

Sometimes joining clubs, getting a job, and going out to meet people doesn't get rid of the problem of loneliness: it aggrevates it because it's when I'm talking with others that I realise that I'm not an average person but a freak as I'm a 36 year old man with no experience of intimate relationships or any real life experiences that others value. Great website, great advice in parts. But I'm still lonely :(

I lived a life where everyone used me as their "freind" or "buddy" amd when they didn't approve of my behavior everyone pushed me away and tried to forget me. I have a mental illnss and every few years I go manic and all my family and freinds told me to either "go die" or "go away" this year. I was not invited to any family gatherings this year and felt true loneliness for the first time in my life as I dwindled away on the streets, a homeless lunatic given up by his loved ones. I am half torn in loneliness and neglect and wonder why I ever let people use me as their "freind" when really I was just another one of their con jobs. Atleasty I have a home now and feel better for life in a certain way, I am not homeless which is better than the way I was. Now I'm still lonely but not lost.

I'm very impressed with the site. I have had diagnoses of depression and anxiety in the past, but recently a mental health worker blurted out that I was "JUST LONELY!". This web page has a lot of insignts into the causes of loneliness. Now, I have to figure out how to change my mode of thinking to alleviate it.

i'm surprised about what i read in your webpage. I have read some articles in some magazines of psicology but i don't trust any of them. I don't believe neither in "autohelp/self-help" books (sorry i dont know how excatly they are called). I've always felt lonely. Last year i felt into depression. I started to look for information, answers or theorys. I think you described very well everything abouth loneliness. Thank you so much for helping to find the words to describe what we feel inside, sometimes it is difficult, you just can't explain it but feel it. Good luck with your project!!

Hi Sean! hmm.. Loneliness for me is sometimes a good feeling, i welcome it, and see so i will have enough of it.. and sometimes just a very deep sad feeling. I have felt periods of loneliness in my life, and somehow i like the feeling of being alone, if it is my own choise.. But sometimes my loneliness can become a very sad and bad feeling... i think that somehow i always end up lonely... and i keep wondering if it is my destiny to be alone.. I belive that the human is always truly alone, but one can be more or less alone..
I feel very alone right now, and i dono when the lonely feeling will go away... i dono what im doing wrong to always feel this.. i just cant seem to find the state of mind when i will feel less alone. I wanna be able to chose when i want to be alone, cause then loneliness will be a friend. Not a enemy. Wish all you lonely out there a nice day..
and remember, we are not really alone.. there are many lonely out there:-)

have just arrived. I am portuguese and I've seen only the first page, but I intend to explore it deeply, because it's a very important subject. Greetings from Portugal (Suburbs of Lisbon)
